Maxine Simons Burton is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is shaped by a lifelong engagement with the arts. Born and raised in Bermuda, she developed an early appreciation for color and creative expression that continues to inform her work today.

After studying in Boston and later in California—where she also taught dance at the college level—Burton continued to expand her artistic practice. Now based in Nebraska, she remains actively engaged in the arts as both a practicing artist and educator, offering instruction in portraiture and drawing.

 

Her experience includes teaching workshops, participating in artist residencies, and exhibiting at art fairs and festivals. She has been featured on That's Clever! and is a past president of Omaha Artists, Inc.

 

Burton’s work has received multiple awards, including the Grumbacher, ADDY, By the Sea, and Omaha Artist Awards.

Artist Statement: 

My artistic journey has taken me through a range of mediums, including painting, glass fusion, and metal sculpture. Each has contributed to my understanding of texture, form, and surface.

 

Working primarily with hand-built stoneware, I create both functional and decorative pieces without the use of a pottery wheel. My functional work includes plates, bowls, and cookware designed for everyday use, while my decorative pieces—such as birds, garden bells, and floral forms—explore a more whimsical and expressive side.

 

Influenced by my experience across multiple mediums, my work reflects a layered approach to texture and design. Each piece is individually formed, allowing for variation, character, and a sense of connection between the maker and the final object.
